Mr. Relation’s Creative Process
I focus on including the students in every part of the creative process.
Mr. Relation, Assistant Teachers Belen and Dianna, and the Preludio Orchestra
Together, we cultivate the general vibe and goals of the ensemble, listen and vote on repertoire we will perform throughout the year, and all have a part in making interpretative musical decisions. Although doing things this way doesn’t always represent how things are done in a standard professional orchestral setting—where the repertoire is predetermined, and the conductor makes all of the interpretive decisions—doing so creates a space where students can think critically about music and the approach they will take in music making.

Shifting the mindset from being boxed in by long-standing classical music practices creates innovative thought, develops the creative process, and gives the students space to explore their own musical ideas.
