Mr. Whitecotton: Music’s Lessons

I began playing bass at an after-school rock band program in late elementary school. From that day forward, I have been extremely passionate about music and the wonders it can do for people of all ages. My experience playing and teaching in a wide variety of ensembles includes various orchestras, jazz bands, marching bands, rock bands and percussion ensembles. The experiences I’ve had have taught me many lessons about how I can create a style of teaching that is holistic and supportive.

My job as a music teacher is to create a focused and calm environment. My feedback is quick and concise so that students can spend as much time as possible playing their instruments while having enough time to build the social connections and joy that come from making music. I believe by doing so, students are able to achieve high expectations while learning, growing, and connecting with each other in space where they can be themselves. Through YAMA, I've had an amazing time being part of such an awesome community with creative, talented, and courageous kids.
