TEDxYakimaSalon | Our Neighborhood’s Musical Heroes

Known locally as Yakima Music en Acción (YAMA), this El Sistema-inspired nucleo, empowers, inspires, unifies, and instills pride throughout the neighborhoods it serves. YAMA is a high-quality, intensive, orchestral music program that is accessible to all children regardless of financial barriers. Its goal is to use music education to disrupt cycles of poverty for children and families in need.

Stephanie Lin Hsu is the Founding Director of Yakima Music en Acción (YAMA) that uses El Sistema orchestral training for at-risk children to create healthy community-building and positive social development. She trained at Sistema sites across Venezuela and throughout the U.S. before launching the YAMA program in January 2013. Prior to this, Stephanie worked as an educator and organizer in New York.
