YAMA collaborates with community organizations in student outreach and recruitment

As Yakima Music en Acción prepares to launch its daily after-school programming in January 2013, Garfield third and fifth graders get a taste of what is to come with the visit of Ismael Estevané, a violinist who studies at the Conservatorio de las Rosas in Morelia, México – Yakima’s sister city!

Ismael Estevané performs for Garfield students as part of YAMA’s outreach to recruit its first group of students. He is accompanied by Stephanie Hsu (Director, YAMA) and Christine Lavik (General Music, Garfield) on piano.

Ismael came to Yakima to perform Mozart’s Fourth Violin Concerto with the Yakima Symphony Orchestra for their annual Día de los Muertos concert, made possible with the support of the Yakima-Morelia Sister City Association. He paid a special visit to Garfield Elementary School, YAMA’s launch site, where he played his violin for Ms. Christine Lavik’s music classes and shared with them his experiences of playing the violin.
