Aylin Hernandez [she/her]

Hello, I’m Aylin Hernandez. I’m excited to be part of the YAMA team and to continue my journey on exploring what music does for students and myself.

I’ve been part of YAMA for many years—first as a student, to Assistant Teacher, and now as a staff member. My journey with YAMA began on the violin, which gave me my first experience with orchestral music and a place where I could meet other people. I was a very shy kid and I had only lived in Washington for just a few years, so I didn’t know that many people to call my friends or a certain group that I felt that I belonged to. 

Over the years, I transitioned from violin to double bass, an instrument that I continue to play today. For me the transition was very easy because I felt that I never really felt connected to the violin or the notes on the high E string. I took a gap year of not playing any instrument, but I was still heavily involved in using my skills that I obtained from when I was playing. Once I came back from my time, I transitioned to double bass. I was inspired by a staff member who was a woman and played double bass. I talked with her and my interest on the double bass grew. She helped me make my transition easier as I didn’t feel alone and didn’t feel that I needed to learn on my own and relied heavily on my ears like I did with the violin. 

Now, as a staff member, I’m grateful for the opportunity to give back to the program that had been such a big part of my life. Having experienced YAMA as a student for many years, I understand the impact that music, mentorship, and supportive community can have on a young person. I’m excited to create those same experiences for the next generation of YAMA students.

I’m still continuing to grow as a teacher through my fellow students and staff members. I’m proud and thankful for YAMA for helping me to continue to grow and I love making music with the YAMA community.
