What the artist needs to do ● QUÉ DEBE HACER EL ARTISTA

When an artist requests that you record for them, they should provide you with a few things:

• Sheet music or another way to learn your part quickly

• An audio file or an exact tempo (in beats per minute) for you to record along with

• It should be clear which part you are being asked to record and on what instrument

• It should be clear whether they want a video recording or just an audio recording.

If you are missing any of these, kindly ask the artist to provide them.

Cuando un artista te pide que grabes algo para ella/él/elle, deberían darte estas cosas:

• Partituras o alguna otra manera de aprender tu parte rápidamente

• Una grabación o un tempo/tiempo exacto (en pulsos por minuto) con la cual puedes grabar

• Debe ser claro cuál parte quieren que grabes y en cuál instrumento.

• Debe ser claro si quieren video o solo audio.

Si te faltan algunas de estas cosas, pídeselas al artista.

You will need a few things before you begin:

• A device to record yourself with. We’ll call this your recording device

• A device to keep tempo. This will either play an audio file or be a metronome. We’ll call this your tempo device

• Headphones

• A quiet place to record

If you can’t provide one or more of these, let the artist know and the two of you can work out a solution.

Antes de empezar necesitarás algunas cosas:

• Un dispositivo para grabarte. Lo llamaremos tu grabador

• Un dispositivo para mantener el tiempo. Tocará un archivo de audio o será un metrónomo. Lo llamaremos tu aparato de tiempo.

• Audifonos/auriculares 

• Un lugar callado donde hacerlo

Si no puedes conseguir uno o más de estos, dile al artista y juntos pueden encontrar una solución.

When you have everything ready, follow these steps:

1. Set up your tempo device. If you were given an audio file, start playing it and set it to repeat. If you were given a tempo, set up a metronome.

2. Connect your tempo device to headphones and put them on.

3. Set up your recording device. If you are making a video recording, open your camera app and make sure the camera can see you and your instrument well. If you are making an audio recording, open your audio recording app. If making an audio recording isn’t convenient, you can just make a video recording.

4. Start recording. Don’t worry about resetting between takes, as the artist can edit around it.

5. Send your recording to the artist. The best way to do this is to upload your file to a cloud storage provider such as Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive. Then, give the artist a link to the file.

Cuando ya tengas todo listo, sigue estos pasos:

1. Prepara tu aparato de tiempo. Si tienes un archivo de audio, tócalo y ponlo a repetir. Si te dieron un tiempo exacto, prende tu metrónomo. 

2. Conecta tu aparato de tiempo a tus audífonos y pontelos.

3. Prepara tu grabador. Si estás grabando video, prende tu aplicación de cámara y asegura que la cámara puede ver bien a ti y tu instrumento. Si estás grabando audio, prende tu aplicación de grabar audio. Si no conviene grabar audio, puedes grabar un video nomás.

4. Empieza a grabar. No te preocupes de empezarlo de nuevo entre tomas, el artista lo podrá editar.

5. Manda tu grabación al artista. La mejor manera de hacerlo es subir tu archivo a un sitio de nube como Google Drive, Dropbox, o OneDrive. Luego, dale un enlace para el archivo al artista.

Tips ● consejos

If you feel like going the extra mile, these tips will make your recording the best it can be:

• Keep light sources behind the camera and remove light sources that are in front of it. This will keep you well lit.

• Keep your headphones on one ear so that you can hear yourself playing

• If your headphones have a cord, run the cord under your top so it’s less conspicuous

• If you have a good quality microphone, use it. If you can’t hook it up to your video device, just have it recording alongside. The artist can edit it together. Keep the microphone close to your instrument (about a foot) to lessen the amount of extraneous noise it picks up.

Si quieres el mejor posible resultado, estos consejos te ayudarán:

• Para que te veas claramente en el video, mantén las luces detrás de la cámara y saca todas las luces que haya en frente de la cámara.

• Pon tus audífonos en una sola oreja para que puedas escuchar lo que tocas

• Si tus audífonos tienen alambre, ponlo debajo de tu camisa para que se vea menos.

• Si tienes un buen micrófono, usalo. Si no lo puedes conectar a tu aparato de grabar video, ponlo a grabar a la misma vez. El artista puede editarlos juntos. Mantén el micrófono cerca a tu instrumento (más o menos 1 pie) para que grabe lo menos extra sonidos posible.
