Esmeralda Perez: Two-Way Street

Teaching is a two way street, we learn as much from the students as they do from us, the teachers. No one learning technique will suit all students. As educators we strive to continue broadening our understanding of different learning styles and how to adapt lesson plans to best engage students. Just as we remain accountable to learn and to adapt to our students' needs, it is also important to remind students of taking accountability for their own learning.

I strongly believe that by teaching students responsibility early on will help them for the continuation of their education as well as lifelong learning. As a teacher my responsibility is to show up everyday, prepared not only with teaching materials, lesson plans but also with the attitude and capacity to be fully present for my students. And just as I do my part to play my role I also hold expectations for my students to show up ready to learn, with the necessary materials and be in the headspace to learn. It can be difficult at times to be in a headspace ready to learn or teach and when that happens it's important to take note of it.

Life can be messy and we’ve all had tough days, and it can be comforting to vent or talk to someone about it. Therefore sometimes the best way to show up for my students is by offering them some kindness. This can be, in its simplest form, a greeting, or making a quick joke, or taking the time to check in on them when I see them struggling. The thing about kindness is that it can create opportunities for connection.
