YAMA Goes Camping: Wrapping Up Our Year Together

Setting up at our campsite at Maryhill State Park

At the end of the school year and at the beginning of summer, our Philharmonia students set off on a special overnight camping adventure — one of the unique perks of being part of our program. These bonding trips are designed not only to deepen our connection through music but also to help us explore new experiences together, outside of the classroom and rehearsal space.

This year, we were fortunate to collaborate with the Maryhill Museum of Art for a memorable day filled with creativity and fun. Students enjoyed a scavenger hunt through the museum’s galleries and capped it off with a special concert. From art to music, it was a reminder of how powerful it can be to experience culture in different forms.

Back at camp, students waded into the Columbia River and learned practical skills like building a fire — which, of course, ended in the sweetest way possible: roasting marshmallows and making s’mores. The trip also included a visit to the Goldendale Observatory, where students got to gaze at the night sky.

After the energy and excitement of our Spring Showcase, this trip was the perfect way to close out the school year. Camping took us outside of our setting together, and it was a perfect way to spend some quality time, trying new activities and environments. Most importantly, it gave us the space to connect, reflect, and grow together — through music, adventure, and shared experiences. What an amazing opportunity to wrap up the year and look forward to the new season ahead!
